Position Description

Under broad direction, the Senior Lawyer provides strategic, practical and technically sound legal advice on complex, sensitive and high-risk matters affecting the department. The role contributes to organisational decision-making, manages legal risk and supports the achievement of departmental priorities within a complex legal and policy environment.

Legal Services Branch provides legal services across a range of practice areas. Successful candidates may undertake work in administrative law, commercial law, employment law, information law, litigation and dispute resolution, governance, legislative development, regulatory matters and other legal functions relevant to the department’s operations.

Eligibility / Additional Requirements

To be eligible for employment with Department of Social Services (the department), you must be an Australian citizen. An applicant's suitability for employment with the department will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process. This will include an identity and criminal history background check.

Eligibility to obtain an Australian Government Security Clearance

To be eligible for this role, applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at the required level through the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA). This includes meeting AGSVA's identity, referee, and background checking requirements. Applicants with a history of overseas residence, employment, or travel may still be eligible, provided they can supply the information, documentation, and referee details required to support the security vetting process in accordance with AGSVA requirements.
