Generalist Solicitor | Community Legal Centre
Generalist Solicitor | Broken Hill
Broken Hill | Full-time | Fixed-term to June 2030
$95,589 - $113,619 + super + salary packaging
A genuine generalist legal role with purpose, variety and long-term stability
Tradewind Australia is recruiting a Generalist Solicitor to join an established Community Legal Centre's Far West NSW legal team in Broken Hill.
This is a great opportunity for a solicitor who wants to move beyond a narrow area of practice and work across a broad range of matters while providing accessible legal services to people who may otherwise struggle to access them.
You’ll work alongside an established Principal Solicitor and wider legal team, providing advice, casework, court representation, duty lawyer services, community legal education and outreach across the Far West.
What you'll be doing
Your work will be varied and community-focused, including:
- Providing free legal advice, assistance and casework to clients across the Far West
- Representing clients in courts and tribunals
- Participating in the duty lawyer roster at Broken Hill and Wilcannia Local Courts
- Working across matters including family law, family and domestic violence, minor criminal and traffic matters, tenancy, civil law, employment, welfare rights and credit/debt
- Travelling to regional and remote communities to provide outreach legal services
- Developing and delivering community legal educationBuilding relationships with local services and communities
- Working closely with non-legal professionals to connect clients with other support services where appropriate
The role is based in Broken Hill, with regular travel to communities including Wilcannia, Menindee, Ivanhoe, Tibooburra, White Cliffs and Wentworth.
About you
We're looking for an admitted Australian solicitor who can bring sound legal skills, good judgement and a genuine interest in community-based legal practice.
You’ll ideally bring:
- A current NSW practising certificate, or eligibility to obtain one
- Around two years or more post-admission experience, although candidates with less experience and strong transferable skills will also be considered
- Experience across a range of legal matters, particularly family law, court work, traffic/criminal matters or other generalist practice
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Experience working with vulnerable or disadvantaged clients
- The ability to work independently while contributing to a broader team
- A current driver's licence and willingness to travel throughout the region
Experience in a Community Legal Centre, Legal Aid, Aboriginal Legal Service or another community-focused legal environment will be highly regarded.
You don't need to have done everything before. If you have strong generalist, litigation or advocacy experience and can demonstrate the ability and willingness to develop further areas of practice, we'd still like to hear from you.
Why consider Broken Hill?
This is more than a regional relocation for another legal job.
You’ll have the opportunity to work closely with communities across Far West NSW, take on meaningful court and generalist work, and build experience across areas of law that are difficult to access in more specialised private practice environments.
The role also offers the stability of a four-year fixed-term appointment through to June 2030, providing a longer-term opportunity to establish yourself in the community and develop your practice.
For someone looking for a genuine change of pace, regional living and work with a clear social justice purpose, this could be a very different kind of legal career opportunity.
Interested?
If you're an experienced solicitor looking for broad legal work, meaningful client contact and the opportunity to build a life and career in regional NSW, we'd be keen to hear from you.
Relocation support is available.
