Job Description
Work with a leading Canberra-based organisation operating in a complex, regulated environment with a strong reputation for stability, performance and long-term value creation.
\n
This organisation plays a critical role in the region's energy landscape and offers finance professionals the opportunity to work across technically challenging accounting matters while remaining closely connected to business operations.
\n
The finance team is high performing, collaborative and values strong culture, accountability and continuous development.
The Opportunity\n
This is a permanent leadership role responsible for the group's technical accounting, statutory financial reporting and taxation compliance.
\n
You'll lead a team of five, report to the Group Manager, and will play a key role in presenting to the audit and risk committee and the board on financial reporting, external audit and tax matters.
\n
You'll have the chance to:
\n
- \n
- Own the full picture: financial reporting, external audit and end-to-end tax sit together in one role, rather than being split across separate teams \n
- Work on technically complex matters, including joint venture and partnership reporting and impairment modelling in a regulated context \n
- Lead the implementation of new accounting standards and sustainability reporting requirements across the group \n
- Shape governance, systems and processes across accounting, tax and back-office treasury \n
The Role\n
You'll be responsible for:
\n
- \n
- Reporting to the audit and risk committee and the board on financial reporting, external audit and tax matters, including updates to the Delegation of Authority and Tax Risk Management Policy \n
- Leading delivery of year-end financial statements for the JV and partnership entities \n
- Running the external audit process and maintain a strong working relationship with the external auditors \n
- Providing technical accounting advice across the group on complex transactions, new initiatives, programs and projects \n
- Overseeing the implementation of new accounting standards, disclosures and sustainability reporting requirements, and document the group's material accounting and tax policy positions \n
- Managing the month-end timetable and close, including reconciliations, consolidations, fixed asset register maintenance and reporting of results to owners \n
- Leading year-end impairment modelling for assets, including assessing regulatory changes that may impact impairment assessment required under accounting standards \n
- Leading the end-to-end tax function, covering compliance, reporting and advice across income tax, GST, FBT, payroll tax and other taxes, and consult owners on positions for material transactions \n
- Providing commercially focused tax advice on strategic initiatives, and manage external tax advisers on compliance reviews and any ATO-initiated reviews \n
- Overseeing Payment Times Reporting Scheme and foreign investment (FIRB) reporting obligations \n
- Leading, coaching and developing your team, including goal setting, performance management and capability uplift \n
The Ideal Person\n
You're a senior CA or CPA who is as comfortable in the technical detail of a complex accounting or tax position as you are explaining it to an audit committee.
\n
You see governance and process improvement as part of the job rather than an add-on.
\n
You will bring the following skills and experience:
\n
- \n
- Tertiary qualifications in accounting or a related discipline, and CA or CPA membership \n
- 10+ years' experience across financial reporting and taxation, ideally in a large commercial organisation working with multiple stakeholders \n
- A track record managing external auditors and meeting statutory and regulatory reporting requirements \n
- Strong technical accounting expertise and confidence interpreting complex accounting matters \n
- Experience shaping and implementing systems, processes and governance frameworks \n
- Experience leading, coaching and developing a team \n
- Hands-on experience with a large ERP, and strong financial modelling capability with advanced Excel skills \n
Salary / Rate\n
- \n
- $195k + Enhanced Super \n
- Salary above the base will be considered commensurate with skills and experience \n
- Ongoing, full-time position \n
- Office located in Canberra City \n
