Job description
  • Mid-career role with hands-on design & engineering focus
  • Work on advanced silicon enrichment technology projects
  • Australian Citizenship & NV1 clearance eligibility required

About the company/role:

  • An exciting opportunity exists for a mid-career Mechanical Engineer with 2+ years' post-graduate experience to join a small, high-performing engineering team. Working on advanced silicon enrichment projects, you will play a key role in the design, drafting, fabrication, assembly and commissioning of specialised mechanical systems.
  • This is a hands-on position suited to a pragmatic, outcome-driven engineer who enjoys contributing across the full project lifecycle. You will work closely with Mechanical Engineers, Technicians, the Workshop Manager, Electronics Engineers and Laser Engineers in a collaborative environment.
  • The hiring manager is seeking a genuine "jack-of-all-trades" engineer who can take a concept from initial requirements through CAD development, manufacturing drawings, prototype builds and testing. While strong design capability is essential, practical aptitude and a willingness to get involved are equally important.
  • Opportunity to join an innovative engineering and technology environment transitioning from R&D to commercial Silicon manufacturing.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop mechanical designs from concept through to prototype and manufacture.
  • Create detailed 3D CAD models and 2D manufacturing drawings.
  • Design and develop mechanical and opto-mechanical systems.
  • Support fabrication, assembly, testing and commissioning activities.
  • Develop prototypes, jigs, fixtures and test equipment.
  • Conduct design reviews, validation and risk assessments.
  • Manage procurement and external manufacturing activities.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Contribute to QA/QC and engineering documentation processes.
  • Ensure compliance with WHS and regulatory requirements.

Skills/experience:

  • Mechanical Engineering degree with 2+ years' post-graduate experience.
  • Strong CAD modelling and detailed design capability.
  • Experience developing designs from concept through to manufacture.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD software, ideally SolidWorks.
  • Hands-on engineering experience with fabrication, assembly or workshop environments.
  • Experience with pressure equipment, vacuum systems, optics or electro-mechanical integration would be highly regarded.
  • Background in defence, medical devices, nuclear, scientific instrumentation, manufacturing or heavy industry environments preferred.
  • Ability to translate engineering requirements into practical design solutions.
  • Comfortable working closely with technicians and workshop personnel.
  • Coachable, adaptable and eager to learn from senior engineers.
  • Australian Citizenship is essential.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an NV1 Security Clearance.

Culture/Benefits:

  • Small, collaborative and highly skilled engineering team. Based in Lucas Heights.
  • Broad exposure across design, drafting, prototyping and project delivery.
  • Opportunity to work on cutting-edge engineering and technology projects.
  • Significant hands-on involvement throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Opportunity to develop expertise across mechanical, optical and electro-mechanical systems.
  • Competitive salary package of approximately $110,000-$115,000 plus superannuation + bonus, with flexibility for the right candidate.
  • Open to candidates who may be slightly more junior but possess strong practical aptitude and relevant hands-on experience.
  • Individual contributor position with no direct reports.
