Job description

GET Education Australia provides practical education and training at its Melbourne CBD campus. With courses in business and construction, we aim to equip students with skills they can apply in the workplace. We are seeking a Student Counsellor to support students’ wellbeing and help them access appropriate support throughout their studies.

About the role

We are seeking a Student Counsellor to provide confidential counselling and wellbeing support to students. You will work with students from diverse backgrounds, respond to both routine and urgent presentations, and collaborate with staff and external services to help students access appropriate support.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide confidential individual counselling to students in person, by telephone and by video, addressing personal, social, emotional and study-related concerns.
  • Assess students’ circumstances, including learning difficulties, adjustment challenges and special support needs, and develop appropriate support strategies with them.
  • Identify and respond to urgent wellbeing concerns within the scope of the role, including risk assessment, escalation and referral to appropriate external professionals or services.
  • Liaise with teaching and student support staff, where appropriate and subject to confidentiality requirements, to assist students experiencing difficulties with their studies or wellbeing.
  • Provide students with information and practical strategies to help them manage challenges and engage with their studies.
  • Facilitate relevant group sessions and wellbeing workshops for students.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential counselling records and contribute to the improvement of student support services.

About you

You will have:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in counselling, psychology, social work or a related field, and current membership of, or eligibility for membership with, an appropriate professional association;
  • At least one year of relevant counselling experience working with people from diverse social and cultural backgrounds;
  • The ability to assess risk, respond to urgent presentations and make appropriate referrals;
  • Sound knowledge of confidentiality, privacy, professional ethics and relevant reporting obligations; and
  • Strong communication, record-keeping and teamwork skills.

Experience supporting students in an education setting and delivering wellbeing workshops will be highly regarded.
