Software Engineer – Edge (Python | SNMP | Modbus | MQTT)
Software Engineer – Edge (Python | SNMP | Modbus | MQTT)
accesstel has been operating across the Asia-Pacific since 2001. We provide specialised asset management solutions and services to owners and operators of critical infrastructure, and we're a strategic partner to some of Australia's largest telecommunications companies. We measure our success by the long-term relationships we build with our customers.
The role
You'll maintain and evolve our Edge Suite. That covers the scripts and applications running on edge gateways that talk to third‑party devices over industrial protocols, plus the APIs and services on our Element Management System (EMS). Your focus will be reliability, security, observability and performance in production, and extending the devices and protocols we support.
This is a hands‑on, customer‑facing role. You'll work day to day with our Customer Success team on troubleshooting, talk directly with customer engineers, and partner with our Platform team on new APIs. Over time, you'll help turn Edge Suite into a more clearly defined product and move relevant functionality into accata.
We're looking for someone who spots what needs doing and takes it forward without waiting to be asked.
What you'll be doing
- Maintaining, troubleshooting and enhancing gateway scripts that communicate with devices over SNMP, Modbus RTU/TCP and MQTT
- Designing, building and maintaining EMS‑side APIs and services
- Diagnosing and resolving production issues across the edge‑to‑EMS stack
- Improving logging, metrics and alerting so we find issues before customers do
- Working with customer technical and field teams on device integrations
- Testing your work and following our change control and release processes
- Suggesting better tooling, automation and practices as deployments scale
What you'll bring (do not apply unless you have all of these)
- 5+ years in software engineering
- Strong Python skills, applied to network‑connected or device‑integration systems
- Hands‑on production experience with at least two of SNMP, Modbus (RTU/TCP) and MQTT
- Solid networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, routing, firewalls), including troubleshooting connectivity across customer networks
- Experience building and maintaining RESTful APIs within an established codebase
- Direct experience working with customers on technical issues, with the ability to diagnose problems and explain them clearly under pressure
- A degree in Computer Science, IT, Software Engineering or a related field
Highly regarded
- Knowledge of power systems (DC power systems, rectifiers, batteries and their monitoring)
- Experience in telecommunications, energy or other regulated industries, including gateway hardware and field device commissioning
- Observability tooling in distributed or edge environments
- AWS, cloud engineering or solutions architecture certifications
- Linux (RHEL/CentOS, Ubuntu), Git, CI/CD and Agile ways of working
Our engineers work on systems used in critical infrastructure, with the chance to influence architecture, solve complex hardware and software problems, and see products through from development to field deployment. We're a small, growing engineering group where pragmatism and ownership are valued, and where security and reliability are treated as real engineering concerns rather than tick‑box compliance.
