Job description

An opportunity is available for an experienced lawyer to join a growing Financial Services Regulatory practice in Melbourne.

Sitting within a broader corporate and commercial offering, the role will involve advising clients across the financial services sector on complex regulatory, compliance and advisory matters.

The practice works with organisations operating across wealth management, superannuation, insurance, funds and other regulated financial services businesses, providing exposure to a varied mix of technical and commercially focused work.

This is an opportunity for a lawyer with existing financial services experience to deepen their regulatory expertise while taking greater ownership of matters and developing direct relationships with clients.

The Role

Your work may include:

  • Advising financial services businesses on regulatory and compliance obligations.
  • Advising on Australian Financial Services licensing requirements and related regulatory issues.
  • Working on matters involving superannuation and retirement products.
  • Advising insurers and other industry participants on regulatory requirements affecting their businesses and products.
  • Advising fund managers, investment businesses and other financial services providers.
  • Assisting clients to navigate changes to financial services legislation and regulation.
  • Providing advice on governance, compliance frameworks and regulatory risk.
  • Reviewing and advising on financial services documentation, policies and processes.
  • Assisting clients with regulatory engagement and responding to compliance issues.
  • Providing practical advice on the implementation of regulatory change.
  • Managing matters independently while working alongside senior practitioners on more complex or strategically significant work.
  • Building trusted relationships with clients across the financial services sector.

At the more senior level, there will also be opportunities to support and mentor junior lawyers and become increasingly involved in the development of client relationships.

About You

You will be an admitted lawyer with approximately 4+ years' post-admission experience and an interest in developing your career within financial services regulation.

Ideally, your experience will include one or more of the following:

  • Superannuation.
  • Life or general insurance.
  • Funds management or investment products.
  • Regulatory compliance and governance.
  • Broader corporate or commercial work within the financial services sector.

Experience across every area is not required. Lawyers with strong experience in one or more financial services regulatory streams who are interested in broadening their practice are encouraged to enquire.

You will also bring:

  • Strong technical drafting and advisory skills.
  • The ability to interpret and apply complex regulatory requirements.
  • A commercial and practical approach to legal advice.
  • Strong organisation and attention to detail.
  • Confidence managing matters with an appropriate level of autonomy.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • An interest in building long-term client relationships.
  • The ability to work collaboratively and support more junior lawyers where appropriate.

The Opportunity for You

You will join an established commercial practice with the opportunity to develop specialist expertise in an increasingly important area of financial services law.

The role offers exposure to sophisticated clients and varied regulatory matters, together with direct client interaction and increasing responsibility as your experience develops.

For an experienced lawyer looking to build a long-term practice in financial services regulation, the position provides a strong platform to deepen your technical capability, broaden your industry exposure and continue progressing at a senior level.
