Teaching ServicePosition InformationThe Assistant Principal Learning and Support (APLAS) position is based at West Wallsend Public School, located in the Lake Macquarie North Region. West Wallsend Public School is a K-6 school that serves a diverse community. In 2025, approximately 19% of its students identified as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. The school comprises 11 mainstream classes. The school caters to a complex, low socioeconomic community and is committed to maintaining high expectations while continuously improving educational outcomes for all students and staff.
The APLAS will provide support to K-12 schools in the Lake Macquarie North Network, offering direct and timely assistance to students with additional learning and support needs, as well as their teachers. Many of these students come from diverse cultural, linguistic, and socio-economic backgrounds. The role and activities of the APLAS are guided by the Disability Standards for Education 2005. The emphasis of the APLAS role will align with school and regional priorities and programs that support students with additional learning and support needs. This position will be characterised by a collaborative and consultative approach, ensuring that students and their parents or caregivers are actively involved in the educational process.
Specific Selection CriteriaIn addition to the general selection criteria, approval to teach students with learning and support needs primary and/or experience teaching students with learning and support needs primary in regular classes. Capacity to provide specialist assistance to students in regular classes with additional learning and support needs and their teachers. 1. Highly developed interpersonal, communication, organisational and management skills to provide professional support to a range of school-based personnel, including learning and support teachers. 2. Capacity to promote and support the development of effective learning and support teams within schools and an understanding of disability legislation. 3. Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and enhance the capacity of school-based learning and support teams to develop and implement differentiated educational programs for students with additional learning and support needs. General Selection Criteria 1. Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice 2. Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs 3. Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams 4. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents 5. Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning 6. Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policy ConditionsAn unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement.
