Job description

About Us

The Salvation Army is a Christian movement and one of Australia's largest and most-loved charities. We believe in doing good that transforms lives and futures for the better. It is this belief which drives us to find new ways and places where we can make a difference. From times of personal crisis to moments of national grief, we are always here providing support, safety, community, and opportunity.

About the Role

The Salvation Army’s Moneycare service is seeking a skilled and compassionate Financial Counsellor to join the team in Karratha. This role provides high-quality financial counselling to individuals experiencing financial difficulty or hardship, supporting them to build financial resilience, improve wellbeing and navigate complex financial systems.

Working within a relational, community-centred model, the Financial Counsellor delivers casework, advocacy, education and ongoing assessment. The role also provides mentorship to Financial Capability Workers and contributes to continuous improvement, service development and community engagement.

This is a meaningful opportunity to support a regional community where financial counselling services are highly valued and where your work can create lasting impact. Pay is in accordance with the SCHADS Level 5 Award.

How You Will Make an Impact

  • Provide financial counselling to community members experiencing financial hardship or seeking to prevent financial difficulty
  • Build strong, respectful relationships that promote self-determination and participation
  • Develop holistic, community-member-centred case plans aligned with TSA’s Practice Framework
  • Conduct ongoing assessments and maintain accurate, timely case notes and data in SAMIS
  • Advocate on behalf of community members with creditors, service providers and external agencies
  • Support community members to access services, strengthen community connections and build financial resilience
  • Mentor and support Financial Capability Workers
  • Identify risks, service gaps and opportunities for service improvement
  • Participate in team meetings, supervision, professional development and quality improvement processes
  • Contribute to a positive, collaborative and culturally safe workplace

What You Will Bring

  • Hold the Diploma of Financial Counselling and accreditation, or be currently completing the Diploma and progressing toward accreditation
  • Experience working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, including those for whom English is not a first language
  • Knowledge of local Aboriginal communities and culture (or willingness to learn)
  • Strong money management, negotiation and advocacy skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage competing priorities
  • Experience supporting people experiencing crisis or complex challenges
  • High-level communication skills, including written, verbal and digital
  • A current driver’s licence

What We Offer

  • Remote Area Housing Benefit for employees living and working in Karratha (up to $31,800 tax free)
  • Relocation assistance of up to $5,000 for eligible employees
  • Entertainment Benefit ($2,650 tax free)
  • Flexible working arrangements
  • Employee Assistance Program – confidential counselling service
  • Financial, retail and lifestyle discounts
  • Discounted health and fitness programs through Fitness Passport
  • Up to 8 weeks of leave per year through our purchase leave scheme
  • Generous parental leave (12 weeks)
  • Up to 5 days paid leave per year to support a TSA program or activity
  • A supportive, inclusive culture with passionate and dedicated team members
  • The opportunity to make a meaningful difference in a regional community

How to Apply

To apply, please submit a resume and cover letter outlining your experience, qualifications and suitability for the position.

The Salvation Army is an Equal Opportunity Employer who provides an inclusive work environment and embraces the diverse talent of its people. We value people of all cultures, languages, capacities, sexual orientations, gender identities and/or expressions.
