The Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) supports the wellbeing of Australia's veterans, their families, and dependants. The department delivers compensation, health care, rehabilitation, and income support services, while also honouring veterans' service through commemorations and policy advice to government. DVA works in partnership with ex-service organisations, health providers, and the broader community to ensure veterans are supported throughout their lives and recognised for their contribution to Australia.
Key Duties
- Apply advanced data mining, machine learning and statistical techniques to structured and unstructured data.
- Build, validate and deploy predictive and explanatory models to address business problems and inform decision‑
- Provide analysis and insights into the drivers of business performance and influence priorities through evidence‑based recommendations.
- Manage relationships with business areas, understand their requirements and translate complex analytical concepts into clear, actionable outputs.
- Assess and select modelling techniques and data sources, ensuring data quality, integrity and security throughout the analytics lifecycle.
- Present technical and non‑technical information in a clear and concise fashion, tailored to stakeholder needs.
- Develop dashboards and visualisations using tools such as Power BI or Tableau.
- Lead small teams or project streams, plan and manage resources and deliver analytics projects to agreed timeframes and standards.
- Drive capability uplift within the branch and among business data users through knowledge sharing and coaching.
- Maintain up‑to‑date documentation of models, processes and findings to ensure reproducibility and transparency.
Key Skills and Capabilities
- Demonstrated experience in data science, analytics and statistical modelling, including machine learning and data mining.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or R and experience with data visualisation tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI).
- Strong data management skills, including data sourcing, cleaning, transformation and integration.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to present complex information to a range of audiences.
- Experience in project management and leading small teams.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high‑quality outcomes under tight timeframes.
- Understanding of data governance, privacy and security obligations.
