Job description

Are you passionate about promoting a safety-first culture and ensuring compliance with Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) standards. BYCA is looking for a dedicated and proactive Health, Safety and Environment Manager for our exciting construction project based in Hobart, Tasmania.

Key Responsibilities

Health and Safety

  • Develop, maintain and implement health and safety management plans and strategies
  • Conduct thorough risk assessments to identify potential hazards, develop preventative measures, and implement controls to minimize risks across the workplace.
  • Develop and enforce company-wide Health & Safety policies and procedures, ensuring they align with industry standards and legal requirements.
  • Communicate HSE legislative requirements that impact stakeholders within the Project.
  • Support AMT by providing technical support, advice, and assistance with HSE risk management / related queries.
  • Review the implementation of construction activities ensuring delivery in accordance with the Safety Management Plan.
  • Design and deliver comprehensive safety training programs for all employees.
  • Lead investigations into accidents and near misses, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
  • Conduct regular safety audits and inspections to monitor adherence to HSE standards.
  • Collaborate with management, supervisors, and employees to promote a safety-first culture.
  • Develop and maintain emergency response plans, ensuring employee training and readiness.
  • Conduct audits and reviews of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Risk Assessments.
  • Drive continuous improvement in field performance and compliance.
  • Develop productivity dashboard on HSE components of the Program.
  • Provide on-the-ground coaching, mentoring, and support to teams.
  • Coordinate contractor management and oversee contractor compliance, audits, and emergency procedures relating to HSE.
  • Manage incident reporting, investigations, and injury management
  • Evaluate and manage external contractors' Health and Safety performance.

Environmental Management :

  • Implement an Environmental Management System (EMS).
  • Develop, maintain and implement Environmental & Carbon Management Plans and sub plans.
  • Establish waste management, water conservation, and environmental aspects of the project.
  • Develop plans for chemical management and environmental incident response.
  • Conduct environmental audits and deliver awareness training.
  • What we are looking for :

    We’re looking for a proactive leader with strong influencing skills and a passion for creating a positive safety and environmental culture. You should be detail-oriented, adaptable, and able to work both independently and as part of a team. Your expertise in risk management, safety and environmental practices, and ability to navigate complex regulatory environments will be crucial in this role.

    Knowledge and Experience :

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in HSE leadership roles.
  • Experience working in extreme weather conditions and / or remote areas.
  • Experience in working in extremely sensitive areas in terms of Environment.
  • Skills and Capabilities :

  • Proven track record in developing and implementing HSE management systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of WHS and Environmental legislation.
  • Hands-on experience managing safety, health and environment on construction projects.
  • Mandatory Qualifications :

  • NEBOSH General Certificate in Health and Safety.
  • Preferable Qualifications :

  • BSC in Environmental engineering or similar.
