As part of our commitment to excellence in teaching and learning, we are seeking a full-time (part-time may be considered) dedicated and skilled Material Design Education Assistant to join our Secondary School team in the 2026 school year.

Position Summary

The Material Design Education Assistant supports the effective delivery of Materials Design and Technology (MDT) programs across Years 7–12.

This role provides technical, classroom, and practical support to the teaching staff in wood, metal, and design technology areas, ensuring that workshops, tools, and equipment are maintained safely and efficiently.

This is a hands-on, practical position suited to someone with strong technical skills, a focus on safety, and a passion for helping students engage in creative, project-based learning.

Key Responsibilities

Workshop Support

  • Prepare, set up, and pack down materials, tools, and resources for classes.
  • Assist in the fabrication, repair, and maintenance of student project materials.
  • Operate and maintain machinery and tools (including power tools, hand tools, and CNC / laser equipment).
  • Ensure all machinery, tools, and storage areas are in safe working order and compliant with WHS requirements.

Classroom Assistance

  • Support students under the direction of the MDT teacher during practical lessons.
  • Model and reinforce safe workshop practices and correct tool usage.
  • Assist with supervision and guidance during project work.
  • Encourage positive student behaviour and a respectful, collaborative workshop environment.
  • Resource & Safety Management

  • Manage stock levels and ordering of materials, consumables, and safety equipment.
  • Assist with WHS compliance documentation and risk assessments.
  • Maintain clear labelling, signage, and safety data sheets (SDS) in workshop spaces.
  • Liaise with external service providers for equipment servicing when required.
  • Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated experience working in a materials design, trade, or workshop environment.
  • Sound knowledge of tools, equipment, and safety standards relevant to wood and metalwork.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with teachers and students.
  • Commitment to the Christian ethos and values of the College.
  • Current Working with Children Check (or ability to obtain).
  • Current First Aid Certificate (or willingness to complete).
  • Experience in a school or educational setting.
  • Knowledge of CAD / CAM or digital fabrication tools.
  • Familiarity with WHS requirements specific to secondary school workshops.
