About the role
The Staff Specialist – General Physician role at Mount Gambier and Districts Health Service is responsible for providing high quality General Medicine inpatient and outpatient care, leading multidisciplinary patient management, and supervising trainee medical officers within the General Medicine unit. The position requires experience in Geriatrics, delivering specialist clinical services, participation in the after‑hours on‑call roster, and contributions to service planning, clinical governance, risk management and quality improvement activities. The role also has a strong focus on teaching and research, including educating junior doctors and other health professionals, taking part in clinical audit and training programs, and supporting best practice models of care aligned with SA Health values and standards.

Key Responsibilities :
Providing high quality General Medicine inpatient and outpatient care, including consultation for referred patients and participation in the after‑hours on‑call roster.
Offering clinical leadership within the General Medicine unit, facilitating multidisciplinary teamwork and supporting safe, patient‑centred care.
Supervising and mentoring trainee medical officers, interns and medical students, and contributing to teaching of other health professionals.
Participating in clinical audit, quality improvement, safety and risk management activities, including incident reporting and development of best practice models of care.
Assisting the Head of Unit with planning and organising clinical service delivery, and participating in relevant clinical and organisational committees.
Ensuring accurate and timely clinical documentation, including electronic medical records, discharge summaries, specialist opinions and correspondence to referrers.
What we’re looking for
Specialist physician with strong General Medicine expertise and a commitment to high quality, patient‑centred care. An interest or subspecialty in Geriatrics is strongly preferred.
Eligible for specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia, with demonstrated experience managing a broad range of general medical conditions.
Proven skills in clinical leadership, multidisciplinary teamwork, and the supervision and teaching of junior medical staff and other health professionals.
Strong communication, professional integrity, adaptability, and a commitment to quality improvement, research and SA Health values of integrity, respect, accountability, care and excellence.
