Elevate’s customer, a leading multidisciplinary engineering consultancy, is seeking a Legal and Contracts Counsel to join their in‑house team on a 3–6‑month contract. This role is ideal for an experienced lawyer with a strong background in construction contracts and experience in professional consultancy agreements who thrives in a dynamic, collaborative environment and enjoys working across multiple jurisdictions.

About the Role

You will play a key role in preparing, negotiating, and administering a range of commercial and construction contracts, while supporting the business on broader legal and compliance matters. You will partner closely with senior managers, external clients, and advisors to optimise contract performance, mitigate risk, and safeguard the company’s commercial interests.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and negotiate contract terms and departures, ensuring alignment with company policies and risk tolerance.
  • Conduct risk assessments to minimize exposure and protect commercial outcomes.
  • Provide strategic guidance to senior leaders on contract and legal issues.
  • Act as the main point of contact for contractual negotiations with external stakeholders.
  • Support the Legal and Contracts Manager with :
  • Legal register maintenance and compliance initiatives.
  • Training and guidance to project managers on contract best practices.
  • Managing and evaluating claims and disputes.
  • Implementation of contract management policies and procedures.
  • Ad hoc legal matters, including litigation, property, and leases.
  • Collaborate with Finance and Business Support teams to drive consistent legal and commercial outcomes.
  • Stay abreast of legislative, regulatory, and industry developments affecting the business.

About You

  • Law degree with a current practising certificate.
  • 8+ years post‑admission experience in reviewing, drafting, and negotiating construction contracts (including departures).
  • Prior exposure to professional consultancy agreements and the construction or engineering sector highly desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of contract law, Australian Standards, and relevant legislative frameworks.
  • Commercially astute with the ability to provide practical, solutions‑focused legal advice.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
