About Us
Outpatients Pathology at Peter Mac is a dynamic, fast-paced department dedicated to providing high-quality specimen collection services for our patients. Our team of Pathology Collectors and Registered Nurses supports up to 200 patients daily, ensuring efficient and compassionate care.
Your Role
As a Pathology Collector Grade 2 you will collect specimens and perform ECGs, with opportunities to develop advanced skills such as intravenous cannulation. You will work across a variety of shifts, including inpatient blood collections, in a supportive and collaborative environment.
What We're Looking For
Certificate III in Pathology Collection
Minimum 12 months' experience in blood collection
Ability to work independently in a fast-paced setting
Strong communication and problem-solving skills
Flexibility to work varied hours
Cannulation skills are highly desirable
Responsibilities
Collect, label, package, and dispatch pathology specimens to the laboratory in a timely and skilled manner.
Perform electrocardiography (ECG) and intravenous cannulation (IVC) as required.
Provide an excellent patient experience and maintain accurate patient information.
Adhere to infection control policies and department procedures.
Conduct rapid health assessments of patients presenting to the Outpatient Pathology Department.
Document all procedures, patient details, and any adverse episodes accurately and in a timely fashion.
Key Accountabilities
Demonstrate expertise in pathology collection to ensure the provision of quality care to all patients.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of departmental policies and procedures.
Collect specimens from the right patient and the right specimen type at all times.
Advise the Nurse Unit Manager of any adverse episodes while performing duties.
Practice under the supervision of a Registered Nurse in a complementary and collaborative role.
Apply assessment skills relevant to oncology patients within scope of practice.
Respond to patient needs in a safe and timely fashion, ensuring high patient satisfaction.
Essential Requirements
Certificate III (essential) or Certificate IV (highly desirable) in Pathology Collection from an approved educational institution.
Desirable Requirements
2+ years of Pathology Collection experience.
Basic Life Support and / or First Aid Certificate.
