The opportunity

The SKA Observatory (SKAO) is a next-generation radio astronomy facility that will revolutionise our understanding of the Universe and the laws of fundamental physics. Enabled by cutting-edge technology, it promises to have a major impact on society, in science and beyond.

In Australia, the SKAO is collaborating with CSIRO to operate and support the construction of the low frequency telescope (SKA-Low) in remote Western Australia on Wajarri Yamaji Country.

The Traditional Owners and native title holders, the Wajarri Yamaji, have gifted CSIRO with the traditional name Inyarrimanha Ilgari Bundara for the CSIRO Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory, home to the SKA-Low telescope. The traditional name means ‘sharing sky and stars’ in the Wajarri language.

The Senior HSE Advisor will work with the SKA-Low team to continuously refine our best-in-class safety culture. At present, the SKA project is in the construction phase and the site is under the management and control of the Principal Contractor. Over time, the Principal Contractor will hand back the site which will then be operated by the SKA-Low team for the 50-year planned operation of the telescope.

This role will work with SKAO’s construction contracts, members of the SKA Site Management Team, and SKA internal construction teams to assure a safe construction project on site, and it will support the transition of the site from the project delivery phase into operation of the telescope.

This role will spend 50% of time on site. Travel to and from site will be via 9-seater aircraft, flying from Geraldton to site.

Your duties will include:

  • Implement the SKA-Low HSE Management Plan as a foundation for building a strong, reliable safety culture.
  • Provide clear leadership to the HSE team, fostering a shared sense of purpose and encouraging professional development.
  • Support the broader SKA-Low team in understanding the rationale behind safety requirements and how they contribute to overall success.
  • Prepare HSE reports that clearly communicate key metrics, risks, and outcomes to drive informed decision-making.
  • Lead incident investigations using structured methodologies to uncover root causes and implement effective corrective actions.

Location: Geraldton, Western Australia

Salary: AU$114,219 - AU$123,605 plus 15.4% superannuation and all applicable site allowances when on site

Tenure: Indefinite – Full-Time, Part-Time or Job-Share

Reference: 98649

To be considered you will need:

Essential

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline such as Health, Safety & Environment, Risk Management, or a related field, combined with demonstrated hands-on experience in a senior HSE role.
  • Sound working knowledge of HSE legislation, Australian standards, codes of practice, and HSE management systems, with the ability to apply them effectively in dynamic environments.
  • Proven experience in HSE compliance, reporting, and assurance within construction or operational contexts, with a strong track record of building trust and influencing a wide range of stakeholders—including contractors, regulatory authorities, and internal leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to shape HSE culture, with a history of driving meaningful behavioural change and embedding safety as a shared value across diverse teams.
  • Leadership experience or strong leadership potential, with a commitment to fostering diversity, inclusion, and high team performance within a complex, multi-stakeholder environment.
