Capricorn Citizen Advocacy (CCA) is a small, not-for-profit, community organisation based in Rockhampton, which was established in 1999, specifically to implement a Citizen Advocacy program in the local government regions of Rockhampton and Livingstone.
Capricorn Citizen Advocacy uses the Citizen Advocacy model (which emanates from Dr Wolf Wolfensberger's theory of Social Role Valorisation) and calls for the establishment and support of freely-given, one-to-one relationships between vulnerable people with disability, who have unmet needs in one or more important life areas, and resourceful and principled citizens, who are free from conflict of interest. Citizen Advocates make a personal, voluntary commitment to the person to provide some of the emotional and / or practical support required to help meet the person’s needs and improve their quality of life.
In 2022, CCA also commenced the delivery of its ‘Vantage Point’ client advocacy service which provides a free, short-term, non-legal advocacy advice service. This service is provided in person, by phone or video communication. CCA also does outreach by staff regularly travelling to regional, rural and remote locations in our wider service area. This outreach extends across 12 local government areas in Central Queensland from Yeppoon and Gladstone, west to the Northern Territory, including the Central Highlands and remote centres in outback Queensland. Advocacy, information, advice, and onwards referrals (where relevant) are provided.
