Role Purpose :

ATSILS is seeking two Criminal Legal Practitioners to support our after-hours custody notification service. This is a two-year pilot program that will be Monday to Friday in afternoon and / or evening rosters, you can be based from any Queensland location. The primary responsibility of these roles is to provide high quality legal representation and support via a phone service that is culturally competent and includes thorough welfare for clients in custody after business hours. About You :

  • You must be admitted as a Legal Practitioner in Queensland or hold (or be eligible for immediate acquisition of) a current Practising Certificate and be admitted as a Legal Practitioner or Barrister of the Supreme Court of Queensland and the Australian High Court.
  • Be aligned to ATSILS Values and Our Purpose.
  • You should demonstrate a high level of professional service and capacity across a wide range of Criminal, with some awareness of Family and Civil Law matters, but not mandatory.
  • Committed to providing trauma-informed and culturally safe legal services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, including the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who may be experiencing complex trauma and other circumstances of vulnerability, including mental illness.
  • Highly developed knowledge in diversionary options.
  • Highly proficient in the use of Microsoft Office in a Windows environment, particularly in the use of highly confidential databases with the ability to work independently.
  • Key Responsibilities :

  • In this role, you will deliver Delivery of high quality, trauma informed and pragmatic legal advice over the phone on a wide range of issues affecting a person who is detained and ensure all communication with the QPS, detainees and other service provides is professional, polite and considerate.
  • Ensure that the immediate health, safety and wellbeing needs of the detained person are identified and work with police, family and other services to ensure those welfare concerns are addressed.
  • Ensure all welfare checks, and legal advice are registered in the database and ensure clear and concise notations of actions undertaken to assist with satisfactory continuity of legal advice and support for the client.
  • Liaise with police, family and other agencies if needed to explore bail options and or / access to diversionary options for the detained person with a view to minimise unnecessary remands in custody.
