What you’ll be doing

The Department of Psychological Medicine at the Children's Hospital at Westmead (CHW) hosts a well‑established Consultation‑Liaison (CL) services within Australia's largest provider of children's health services. The service includes a chronic illness and mental health team and a mind‑body rehabilitation program. Statewide quaternary services include the Eating Disorders Team, the Mental Health & Intellect­ual Disability Hub, and the Hall Mental Health Inpatient Unit. Each team is supported by substantive experienced Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists, providing significant opportunities for mentorship for early‑career psychiatrists.

This position is required to provide Child and Adolescent Psychiatric specialist services to the Department of Psychological Medicine SCHN - Children’s Hospital Westmead (CHW) and Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick (SCH). The position of Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist will ensure that;

  • Clinical Services are focused on delivering excellent clinical care to children and supporting their families.
  • Research and teaching is undertaken and focused on the area of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

The Department of Psychological Medicine has a number of clinical teams. The Psychiatrist may be required to work in any of the teams, according to service needs as determined by the Head of Department. The clinical teams are :

  • Intellectual Disability / Developmental Disability Mental Health Team
  • Acute Inpatient Psychiatric Unit
  • Consultation‑Liaison Team
  • Psychosomatic Disorders and Gender Dysphoria Team
  • Eating Disorders Team
  • Clinical responsibilities for the Psychiatrist within the Department of Psychological Medicine include providing direct patient care, supervising the care provided by junior medical staff, and providing child psychiatric consultation to non‑medical team members. All Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists provide a telepsychiatry consultation service to a rural health service, with the expectation of full‑time psychiatrists providing 6 hours per week and one or two rural visits per year (up to 6 days in total). The telepsychiatry service provides child and adolescent psychiatry assessments at the request of remote and rural child mental health clinicians. The psychiatrist acts as a consultant to the mental health worker, who remains the case manager. Some case discussion and case planning may also be required.

    All psychiatrists have admitting rights and are responsible for managing inpatients in Hall Ward and Saunders Unit (the Mental Health Wards in SCHN) and other SCHN wards. Providing safe, evidence‑based treatment is a key part of this role. Provide excellent clinical services to children and their families as part of a multi‑disciplinary team.

    Participate in review and improvement activities, as well as training and education of staff. Abide by the hospital code of conduct and participate in annual performance reviews for clinical services in accordance with the Staff Specialist (State) Award.

    Qualifications and Experience

    Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Specialist Psychiatrist and / or overseas trained specialist pathways. Trainees who are expecting to complete their requirements for Fellowship of the RANZCP within the next 6 months are eligible to apply.

    Demonstrated recent clinical experience in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. Fellowship of the RANZCP and / or other specialist recognition as provided for in the Staff Specialists (State) Award. Membership of the Faculty of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, RANZCP, or equivalent.

    Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and provide leadership of a team.

    Demonstrated effective clinical communication through the use of information technology and written, verbal and interpersonal skills including conflict resolution skills.

    Demonstrated commitment to teaching, continuing education, research and quality improvement.

    Availability to participate in an on‑call roster and to respond on site as required within a reasonable time.

    Experience with a wide range of treatment methods including psychotherapeutic approaches, and the use of psychotropic medications.

    Adaptability to the needs of the child, their family, and the changing requirements of the position.

    The preferred applicant may be considered for the award of a conjoint academic title (levels A to D) in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney at a level commensurate with his / her qualifications and experience. The award of the academic title will also confer membership upon the appointee of the University Department of Paediatrics and Child Health. The academic title will be held for the duration of The Children's Hospital at Westmead appointment. No remuneration is attached to the University appointment. The appointee will be responsible to the University for academic matters and to The Children's Hospital at Westmead for clinical matters.
