About the role

The Manning Base Hospital Unaccredited Trainee Medical Officer programme offers interested and committed UATs an opportunity to develop knowledge, skills and gain experience in Critical Care, Anaesthesia and Acute Medicine. This program seeks to develop practitioners experienced with critical care skills, even though they may wish to subsequently train in different specialties, including Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthetics.

Upon completion of the Critical Care UAT role doctors will be well prepared to apply for trainee positions or further training in Medicine, Intensive Care, Emergency Medicine or Anaesthetics and will also have acquired many transferable skills that will be useful in other training programs. This role is also highly relevant to those wanting to be an acute generalist (e.g. ACCRM RACGP-Rural).

A structured programme with rotations in Anaesthesia (minimum of 2 terms) and other relevant Critical Care specialties (e.g. ED / Acute Medicine / General Medicine / Intensive Care) within a 12 month period.

Medical Officers must be a PGY4 at the commencement of this role to be eligible.

Participation in relief / nights are expected on an equitable basis.

The applicant must have a commitment to rural practice and rural communities.

Where you'll be working

Taree is situated on the banks of the Manning River in the heart of the beautiful Manning Valley, Biripi Country. A spectacular meeting point of coastal beauty and hinterland wonder, the Manning Valley is a gem on the NSW North Coast. Cruise the beautiful river, swim at stunning beaches and find bushwalks, waterfalls and lookouts along the way.

Manning Base Hospital consists of 180 beds and provides an excellent range of specialist inpatient services including Emergency Medicine, General Medicine, Paediatrics, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Intensive Care, Psychiatry, Renal, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Anaesthesia, Rehabilitation Services, Urology and Oncology Services to the local communities of Taree, Forster, Tuncurry, Greater Taree and Gloucester local government areas.

Manning Base Hospital treats approximately 25,000 inpatients, 33,000 Emergency Department patients and 90,700 outpatients each year. With a population of over 90,300 and a median age of 52 years old, the Lower Mid North Coast Sector is projected to have the highest growth in the age group of 85 years and over.

Skills and Experience

• MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
• The Doctor must be a minimum PGY 4.
• Hold an interest towards a future career in Intensive Care Medicine or acute care (Emergency Medicine and Anaesthetics).
• Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising skills, judgment and expertise to provide a high standard of care to all patients.
• Demonstrated high level of organisational, communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to consult with patients and their families, multidisciplinary health care teams and broader internal and external stakeholders.
• Demonstrated teamwork, time management and problem‑solving skills as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Demonstrated excellent communication skills (verbal and written) with patients, relatives, medical and nursing colleagues and other staff.
• Ability to work in a computerised environment.
