Expression of Interest – Utility Surveyors

We are seeking Expressions of Interest from Utility Surveyors at all levels to join leading surveying and infrastructure consultancies across Australia.

This is a speculative registration of interest — ideal for experienced professionals in subsurface utility investigation (SUI) who want to be considered for upcoming projects.

About The Role

Utility Surveyors play a critical role in reducing project risks by delivering accurate underground service information. You will carry out investigations compliant with AS 5488.1 : 2022 Subsurface Utility Information (SUI) , using advanced locating and survey technologies to provide high-quality data to engineering and design teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake utility surveys in line with AS 5488 Quality Levels (A-D).
  • Use industry-standard locating tools : ground penetrating radar (GPR), electromagnetic locators, potholing and vacuum excavation where required.
  • Operate survey equipment : GNSS / GPS receivers, total stations, and laser scanners.
  • Process and deliver outputs in CAD, GIS and BIM formats (AutoCAD, 12d Model, ArcGIS, QGIS).
  • Source and interpret Before You Dig Australia (BYDA) records.
  • Prepare reports, drawings and 3D models to integrate utility data into civil and infrastructure designs.
  • Ensure safe work practices and compliance with WHS regulations.

Skills & Qualifications

Essential

  • Diploma or Degree in Surveying, Geospatial Science, Civil Engineering or related field.
  • Experience in utility locating / subsurface utility surveys.
  • Familiarity with AS 5488 utility classification.
  • Competency with survey instruments (GNSS, total station, GPR).
  • White Card and valid driver's licence.
  • Preferred

  • Experience with AutoCAD and / or 12d Model.
  • CertLoc accreditation (Certified Locator scheme).
  • Membership with SSSI (Surveying & Spatial Sciences Institute) or USLA (Underground Service Locating Association).
  • UAV (drone) accreditation and / or Confined Space Entry certification.
  • Experience mentoring junior surveyors or leading field teams.
