About The Opportunity

This is more than just a job—it’s a chance to be part of a transformative initiative that supports the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal communities across South Western Sydney. As a Counsellor with the SWSLHD Aboriginal Drug Health Team, you’ll play a vital role in delivering culturally safe, evidence-based care to individuals and families affected by substance use.

You’ll be joining a passionate, multidisciplinary team committed to reducing drug-related harm and improving access to holistic, culturally responsive services. Your work will directly contribute to Closing the Gap by supporting healing, resilience, and empowerment through therapeutic interventions that honour cultural identity and community connection.

Whether you're conducting assessments, delivering counselling, or collaborating with Aboriginal Health Workers, your contribution will help shape a more inclusive and effective health system for Aboriginal people.

What You'll Be Doing

The Counsellor attached to the SWSLHD Aboriginal Drug Health Team will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide culturally responsive care navigation and psychological interventions to Aboriginal clients and their families who are dealing with issues related to substance use. The Counsellor will work in partnership with Aboriginal Health Workers to ensure therapeutic interventions have a strong cultural framework that is responsive to the specific needs of Aboriginal consumers and their families.

The Counsellor will provide individual and group-work interventions in a range of settings that reduce drug related harm and provide a high standard of culturally responsive, clinical care in line with SWSLHD policies and procedures, standards, relevant legislation, and the NSW Health Code of Conduct. The position will also participate in professional development, cultural supervision, clinical supervision, teaching, quality activities and other relevant departmental and administrative duties.

Where You'll Be Working

SWSLHD Drug Health Services operates across the South Western Sydney Local Health District, providing a comprehensive range of treatments and interventions for individuals, families, and carers affected by alcohol and other drug use.

The services include inpatient withdrawal at the 'Corella' unit in Fairfield, the Opioid Treatment Program, outpatient clinics, and specialised teams such as the Aboriginal Drug & Alcohol Team and the Youth Service. Recognised for their excellence, SWSLHD Drug Health Services has been a finalist in the NSW Health Excellence in Allied Health Awards, highlighting their commitment to high-quality care and innovation.

The supportive and multidisciplinary team is dedicated to delivering compassionate care and innovative treatment approaches. With convenient locations at hospitals and community health centres, the service ensures accessible and effective support for the diverse communities in the region.

Working here means being part of a committed team focused on improving health outcomes and making a positive impact on people's lives.
