Northern Health are seeking applications from motivated and suitably experienced Mental Health Aboriginal Liaison Officers to join the Narrun Wilip-giin Aboriginal Support Unit.
About Northern Health :
Northern Health is the major provider of acute, maternity, sub-acute, mental health, specialist, community and home-based services in Melbourne's rapidly growing outer north.
Services are provided through our five main campuses :
Northern Hospital Epping, Broadmeadows Hospital, Bundoora Centre, Craigieburn Centre, and Kilmore District Hospital. In addition, Mental Health Services are provided at Epping, Broadmeadows, Jacana, Preston, Mill Park and Coburg.
About the Role :
This role requires The Aboriginal Mental Health Liaison Officer (AMHLO) will provide direct support, referrals, and advocacy for Aboriginal consumers admitted to the Northern Psychiatric Unit (NPU) with mental health conditions, both during their stay and throughout their discharge process. This includes outreach services to their homes, communities, and health services. The AMHLO work collaboratively with other Aboriginal Liaison Officers to care for Aboriginal consumers with mental health conditions. The role will require completing duties at all sites associated with Northern Health as needed.
This role is responsible for providing a cultural lens to Northern Health staff regarding consumer care to support the provision of high quality and culturally appropriate care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers and their families.
To be successful in this role you will have :
Have a sound understanding of Aboriginal history, culture and society, including the impact of colonisation, racism, trauma and child removal policies on individuals, families and the community. Understanding of Aboriginal social and emotional wellbeing / mental health issues and ability to work between Aboriginal and mainstream concepts. Ability to foster cultural awareness in day-to-day contacts with staff. Ability to work within a team as well as independent with good problem-solving skills. Interest in working in a mainstream mental health service. Sound interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively with consumers, families, staff and agencies in the community Experience in working within a mental health service would be highly regarded
