Join us in ensuring transparency and accountability. As a Freedom of Information Officer, you'll help ASIC fulfill its obligations under the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (the FOI Act) and champion best practice in FOI decision-making across the agency.

The team
Legal Services is the primary source of legal advice and assistance to the Commission and teams within ASIC. Legal Services is organised into 4 business units providing services to ASIC teams : Regulatory Legal Services, Enforcement Legal Services, Corporate Legal Services and the Hearing Delegates Panel.
Corporate Legal Services (CLS) is responsible for the delivery of a range of corporate and commercial legal services. This includes advising on legal claims made against ASIC (and its officials); employment law and Work Health & Safety (WHS) matters, privacy matters, as well as on procurements and contracts and MOUs. CLS is responsible for Freedom of Information (FOI) requests, privacy incident investigations and ASIC's delegations and governance framework.
The FOI Team is responsible for managing ASIC's obligations under the FOI Act. Members of the team are required to use technical expertise and judgement to make informed decisions within relevant timeframes, when managing and responding to requests for documents under the FOI Act.
The role
You Will Be Required To
Act as FOI decision maker in relation to more complex requests for access to documents and internal reviews under the FOI Act. Respond to information requests from the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, including briefing and instructing external counsel when needed. Enhance ASIC's FOI capability by providing training and guidance to junior staff and across the agency.
About You
To thrive in this role, you should have experience processing FOI Act requests, including conducting internal reviews and managing OAIC reviews. A solid understanding of the law, practice, and policy related to the FOI Act and its application to government agencies is essential. You should be adept at interpreting and applying FOI legislation, providing sound advice and guidance on FOI matters and presenting complex information effectively to various audiences through excellent written and oral communication skills.
Additionally, strong time management skills and attention to detail are crucial. A client service focus is important, along with the ability to manage a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders and establish productive working relationships with them.
