The National Transport Commission leads national land transport reform in support of Australian governments to improve safety, productivity, environmental outcomes and regulatory efficiency. Established under Commonwealth legislation and through an inter-governmental agreement, the NTC is funded by the Commonwealth, states and territories. As a key contributor to the national reform agenda, the NTC is accountable to Commonwealth, state and territory ministers responsible for Australia’s transport and infrastructure.
As a Principal Legal & Policy Officer, you will provide high quality legal and legislative policy advice on matters across the NTC Work Program. This will include leading and supporting NTC projects relating to national reforms for land transport policy, aimed at improving land transport efficiency, safety and environmental impact. As a leader within the organisation, you will liaise daily with internal and external stakeholders, including state and territory governments and Parliamentary Counsel. You will play an integral role in contributing to developing nationally consistent regulatory frameworks, including providing authoritative and strategic advice on highly complex and sensitive legal and legislative policy issues and proposals. Additionally, you will provide legal advice to NTC executives and management as required by the Chief Legal Officer.
To be considered for this opportunity, you will have demonstrated experience and knowledge of legislative processes and associated policy, including parliamentary and legal requirements along with high level statutory interpretation skills. You will have a strong track record of delivering legislative reform outcomes, including advanced experience in preparing drafting instructions . You will be required to provide strategic and authoritative advice on complex legislative and policy issues under tight timelines and posses the ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders. Additionally, you will be comfortable representing organisations and engage productively with jurisdictions and industry representatives. Formal qualifications in Law or a Legal Practicing Certificate will be highly regarded.
