Research Officer (Postdoctoral)

Competitive salary + superannuation + generous salary packagingFull-time, 1 year contract with potential opportunity to extendBased in Prahran, MelbourneThe opportunityWe are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Bioinformatician to join our Atherothrombosis and Vascular Biology lab.

Both the Atherothrombosis and Vascular Biology, and the Molecular Imaging and Theranostics laboratories pursue a broad range of projects with the common focus of improving diagnosis and therapy of thrombotic and inflammatory diseases such as myocardial infarction and atherosclerosis. A range of biotechnological methods are used, including recombinant protein design / production, cell culture, flow cytometry, generation of functionalised nanoparticles / liposomes / microbubbles, flow chamber, intravital microscopy, ultrasound, MRI, PET, various fluorescence imaging systems and various animal models of thrombosis, atherosclerosis and inflammation. All of these projects have a strong translational orientation, which is facilitated by several laboratory members (physicians, haematologists, cardiologists) treating patients with haematological and cardiovascular diseases. Several of these research projects resulted in patents that are currently being developed further to ultimately improve the health of patients.

How you will make a differenceParticipate in the design, execution and management of multidisciplinary research projects.Apply broad computational approaches and use previous experience to address critical biological questions in cardiovascular projects.Perform literature and manuscript reviews relevant to the respective research area.Prepare research papers and manuscripts for publication and presentation at conferences and workshops, and actively participate in the writing of project reports, grants and other documents.Develop new and / or revise current research methodologies, experimental designs and analytical methods.Coordinate and supervise the work of laboratory / research assistants, students and other support personnel, including supervising students in appropriate experimental design and bioinformatics analyses.Development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic technologies (including patent-relevant work).What will you bring?A PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology or a parallel field such as immunology with demonstrated experience in bioinformatics.An understanding of immunology / cell biology.Experience with HPC-based analysis and in the analysis of single-cell 'omics' data, particularly scRNA-seq.Fluency in R / Python including critical packages for the above analyses.A high level of interpersonal skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with a wide range of people at varied levels internally and externally to the Institute.Demonstrated ability to lead projects / project components, take initiative and be proactive with addressing research problems.Excellent communication and organisational skills with a strong ability to multitask.Demonstrated ability to be a proactive team member and contribute to team development.Understanding of spatial multiplexing technologies desirable.Experience in analysis of pipelines leveraging Machine Learning / AI desirable.Experience in the wet-lab generation and analysis of omics data.Working at the Baker Institute offers flexibility, professional development, and the opportunity to contribute to a research centre of world renown.
