Job description
  • Join one of Victoria's leading Animal Welfare organisations
  • Work within a supportive People & Culture Team
  • Hybrid role, based in Burwood East
  • Make a real difference for People and Animals :

RSPCA Victoria is a leading not-for-profit animal welfare organisation, our mission is clear : to end cruelty to all animals through education, advocacy, and hands‑on care.

We’re now seeking a Health, Safety & Wellbeing Manager who’s not afraid to roll up their sleeves, walk the kennels, and work side‑by‑side with our frontline teams. If you believe that real safety leadership starts with people and presence, this role is for you.

    About the Role

This isn’t a desk‑only role. You’ll be out in the field in Shelters, Clinics, and Op Shops supporting teams where it matters most. You’ll lead the development and execution of our HSW systems, manage incidents and return‑to‑work processes, and help build a strong, engaged safety culture. You will work as part of our People and Culture Team with a part‑time HSW Coordinator dedicated to providing support.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Be Visible & Supportive : Work directly with staff and volunteers across all sites. Listen, observe, and provide real‑time guidance on safe work practices.
    • Incident Management : Own the incident reporting and investigation process, follow through with corrective actions, and manage workers compensation and return‑to‑work plans.
    • Legislative Compliance : Keep our HSW systems aligned with legislation and best practices, and liaise with WorkSafe Victoria as needed.
    • Drive Safety Culture : Engage the team in safety conversations, hazard identification, and practical risk management - not just paperwork.
    • Turn Data into Action : Analyse safety and wellbeing data to identify trends, flag concerns, and drive continuous improvement.
    • About You

You're not just technically strong - you're approachable, grounded, and know how to connect with people. Whether it's in a meeting room or out in the kennels, you know how to make safety relevant and real.

      You bring :

    • Strong understanding of WHS&W legislation, regulations and best practices
    • Experience working closely with frontline teams in dynamic environments
    • A practical, hands‑on approach to safety - you're not afraid to get your boots dirty
    • Proven ability to develop and deliver strategies that make a real difference
    • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build trust across all levels
    • Certificate IV in Work Health & Safety and Return to Work Certification (highly regarded)
    • Why RSPCA Victoria?

    • Get Out from Behind the Desk : Be active, visible, and engaged with the people who care for animals every day
    • Flexible Work : Hybrid flexibility + monthly Rostered Day Off (RDO)
    • Make an Impact : Your work will directly support better outcomes for animals and the people who care for them
    • Wellbeing Support : Access to our Employee and Volunteer Assistance Program (EAVP), including confidential counselling and wellbeing education.
    • Perks : Discounts on retail products, Royal Canin pet food, and Hush Puppies footwear.
    • Salary Packaging : Options available through Maxxia
    • We’d love to hear from you!
