Job description

Newly created role in a Greenfields project, shaping and building the data models and pipelines behind a business area's move to Fabric.

This role sits within finance and reporting team within a large, environment-focused line agency.

The Opportunity

This opportunity is for a Data Engineer to help one business area build its own data capability, as part of the agency’s broader move to Microsoft Fabric.

Fabric has already been proven across a handful of business areas. This team, a section of around ten people, is now building on that momentum.

Made up mostly of accountants who manage financial reporting for a national program, the team has secured its own funding to establish stronger data foundations now, rather than wait for the broader enterprise rollout to reach them.

You’ll be the hands-on data engineer on a small, newly created project team, working alongside the team’s data lead to build the pipelines, models and reporting the business area needs.

You’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Build a business area’s data capability from the ground up, with real ownership over the pipelines and models you create, rather than inherit a platform someone else has already built
  • Work directly alongside the team’s data lead, with genuine input into how this business area’s data is captured, modelled and reported
  • A long-term contract through to 30 June 2027, with a further 12-month extension on offer
  • Build data models and begin migrating the first datasets into Fabric, with quality assurance reporting and dashboards established within the first three months
  • Transition core data sources into Fabric and begin Power BI adoption within six months, with an MVP delivered by the end of the financial year

The Role

Reporting to the team’s data lead, you’ll be the hands-on data engineer behind this business area’s move into Microsoft Fabric.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Designing, building and maintaining data pipelines in Microsoft Fabric, using PySpark and SQL
  • Developing and optimising data models, including dimensional modelling, to support financial and program reporting
  • Building ingestion processes to bring in data from multiple sources, including TechnologyOne, ServiceNow, and a significant volume of historical Excel and SAP-derived data
  • Applying data transformation, validation and quality assurance practices as data moves into Fabric
  • Supporting the team’s move away from manual, Excel-based processes, including helping the team adopt Power BI for reporting
  • Working closely with non-technical stakeholders, including a team predominantly made up of accountants, explaining technical concepts in practical terms
  • Contributing to the change management involved in shifting how the team captures, stores and reports its data

The Ideal Person

You’re a data engineer with strong PySpark and SQL experience, used to building pipelines and models with minimal support around you.

You will bring the following skills and experience:

  • Strong hands-on experience with PySpark and SQL, building and maintaining data pipelines
  • Experience designing and optimising data models, including dimensional modelling
  • A solid understanding of data ingestion, transformation, validation and quality assurance practices
  • Experience working with data from multiple, disparate sources (databases, APIs, flat files, Excel)
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
  • The ability to work independently and deliver outcomes with minimal day-to-day supervision

It’s also desirable if you have:

  • Exposure to Microsoft Fabric or a similar cloud data platform (Databricks, Synapse, or similar)
  • Experience with Power BI, including supporting others to adopt it
  • Experience working within a government or public sector environment

An Australian citizenship, with an existing Baseline security clearance is essential for this role.

Salary / Rate

  • Labour hire opportunity through to 30 June 2027, with a 12-month extension option
  • There is no set rate for this RFQ. However, the value for you coming through myself for this opportunity is that I have extensive experience recruiting into this market, I work with each candidate individually to land on a rate that’s competitive
