About The Team & The Position
The Specialist Cyber Defence Advisory role exists to provide expert consultation and guidance to projects across AEMO to ensure that technology solutions and cyber security controls are designed, implemented, and operated in alignment with cyber security best practices.
The incumbent will act as an advisor, embedding security considerations into project lifecycles and aligning outcomes with AEMO's standard control objectives, which serve as the baseline for the Division and link directly to the Australian Energy Sector Cyber Security Framework (AESCSF) and the Australian Government Information Security Manual (ISM). The objective of this role is to drive continuous improvements in protective security controls, work with both architects and engineering teams on the design and implementation of technical solutions. By influencing project outcomes and fostering a culture of secure delivery, the position strengthens AEMO's resilience and ensures the organisation can operate critical systems in an evolving threat landscape.
Position Responsibilities
- Advisory and Consultation - engage with projects across the organisation to provide expert security guidance during planning, design and delivery phases to ensure cyber security controls are effectively embedded.
- Formulate and implement comprehensive solutions in line with cybersecurity strategy and policy.
- Standards and Framework alignment - Interpret and apply security obligations in SOCI, and AESCSF, ensuring projects meet required maturity and compliance expectations. Secure by Design - advocate for security best practices and embed 'security-by-design' principles in technology solutions. Assess proposed architectures and designs and provide practical mitigation recommendations.
- Partner with Digital, and Operations stakeholders to balance security, usability, and business outcomes. Act as a bridge between project teams and Cyber Defence, ensuring alignment with organisational risk appetite.
- Develop solutions to meet any capability gaps using commercial or self-development technology.
- Guide peers, providing technical direction and fostering professional growth within the team.
- Document designs, processes and procedures for cyber defence systems and tooling.
- Ability to acquire knowledge in a variety of areas including technical, business and environmental along with being highly adaptable in being able to apply these.
Position Requirements
Skills & Experience
Proven experience in digital system engineering. Extensive experience with a range of technologies and tools to effectively protect AEMO's digital assets and complex infrastructure.Strong understanding of enterprise technology architectures and cyber security controls.Familiarity with sector-specific and national frameworks, particularly the AESCSF and the ISM.Experience with Cloud environments - Microsoft Azure, Microsoft 365 Security, Microsoft EntraID, Active Directory.Experience with IT networking, TCP / UDP Protocols, IP addressing, Cisco ISE, firewalls, routing and switching technologies.Experience with Endpoint and infrastructure management tools - XDR, M / O365, SCCM, Intune, Ansible and Infrastructure‑as‑code.Experience and demonstrated knowledge of ITIL ITSM and Agile framework set of best practices.Must be an Australian citizen with the ability to attain and maintain an appropriate level of national security clearance.
Education / Professional Certifications
