Research Assistant (optical engineering)
Join RMIT University as a Research Assistant focused on optical engineering and biophotonics.
The role involves developing and validating innovative nanophotonic therapies for drug-resistant hypertension, including optical design, fabrication, and numerical modelling of light propagation in biological tissues.
Overview
Full-time, fixed term for two years.
Salary Academic Level A plus 17 % superannuation.
Based at Melbourne CBD campus with hybrid working arrangements.
Key Responsibilities
Design, prototype, and test optical systems and feedback mechanisms for nanophotonic therapy.
Conduct numerical simulations of light transport in complex biological media using software such as Zemax, COMSOL, and FDTD.
Operate and maintain optical characterization equipment (spectrometers, lasers, imaging systems).
Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members, writing reports, and presenting findings.
Provide technical leadership and support to students, contractors, and industry partners.
Maintain laser safety standards and supervise relevant protocols.
Qualifications
PhD in Biophotonics, Optical Engineering, Physics or related field.
Extensive experience in optical design, fabrication, prototyping and optical characterization.
Proficiency in numerical modelling of light propagation in tissues.
Expertise in optical simulation software (e.g., Zemax, COMSOL, FDTD) and programming (MATLAB, Python, C++).
Knowledge of biophotonics applications such as endoscopy, optical fibre technologies, or laser-based therapies.
Understanding of tissue optics and photothermal / photochemical effects.
Familiarity with micro-fabrication techniques and nanophotonic device development.
Laser safety supervisor certificate, level 2 or higher.
Strong scientific publication record and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work autonomously while collaborating effectively with team members and industry partners.
Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and manage variable workloads.
