Electrical Engineer and Designer - Power Conversion, Protection and Control

We develop, design, model, manufacture, program, integrate, test, commission, and service advanced industrial battery and control systems. Since 2014, PowerTec has delivered numerous microgrid and energy storage projects ranging from 50 kVA to 5 MVA.

The Opportunity

There is a new opportunity for an Electrical Engineer and Designer - Power Conversion, Protection and Control to join the team.

The Employee Has

  • A university degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a related discipline, or extensive practical experience in power system field services
  • A solid understanding of general systems design
  • At least two years proven professional design, engineering, commissioning, or field service experience in :
  • LV electrical power distribution systems (both primary and secondary)
  • Application of three-phase industrial- or distribution-scale power systems : drives, solar or battery inverters, or generators
  • Design, configuration, and programming of protection schemes, including proficient use of multi-function protection relays
  • Fieldbus control of power devices
  • Supervisory control, monitoring, and communication systems
  • Electrical cabinet or switchboard safety and auxiliary systems
  • PLC programming or embedded systems coding
  • Practical IP networking

Ideally, you will also have experience with

  • Embedded systems software (high-level or scripting languages) on Linux IPCs or similar platforms
  • DC systems design and application (industrial / utility-scale drives, batteries or PV)
  • A similar role within the energy, electrical utility, renewables, or power generation sector
  • Design and development tools for hardware and software (e.g., E-Plan, GitHub, JIRA)
  • A pragmatic, delivery-oriented approach with strong problem-solving abilities
  • Systems design thinking covering field devices, software, and hardware with analytical skills for innovations beyond standard practice
  • Natural curiosity and openness to work across multiple electrical engineering fields
  • The ability to write clear and concise technical documentation
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to meet challenging deadlines while working with a small team and international partners
  • The capacity to stay calm and solution-focused in demanding situations such as outages
  • Confidence in dealing with customers’ technical staff
  • Outstanding professional conduct and excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Australian residency, or a valid visa allowing work in Australia for at least two years
  • By the End of the First Year, the Employee Will Have

  • Developed a solid understanding of PowerTec’s end-to-end solutions from field devices to application software through coaching and on-the-job learning
  • Successfully and punctually conducted industrial or utility microgrid HV and LV basic design tasks (on-grid / off-grid functionality, SLD, MLD, protection, control, communication) under guidance
  • Analysed, designed, configured, programmed, tested, adapted, and optimised functions and protections via code and settings for multi-function protection relays, inverters, battery management units, controller drivers, communication devices, and cabinet environmental systems
  • Configured, tested and commissioned fieldbus communication between field devices and the overlaid power control system
  • Adapted circuit diagrams to accommodate new or customised functional and power device requirements with professional design tools and documentation
  • Programmed cabinet environmental control and protection systems using a modern scripting language
  • Factory-tested electrical, control and communication installations
  • Conducted factory and on-site functional, communication, safety, and failure scenario testing
  • On-site commissioning and functional optimisation across multiple sites in Australia
  • Regular remote maintenance checks and fault analysis on PowerTec’s installed base
  • Project will include : Grid stabilisation, energy storage, and distributed control systems for existing and new industrial HV microgrids (3–5 MVA); multiple Battery Energy Storage Systems for EV charging buffering (100 kVA–500 kVA); a community BESS; and one or two smaller microgrids (250 kVA BESS)
  • Developed and documented site-specific protection designs for submission to network operators and customers; designed and followed an Inspection and Test Plan (ITP) and delivered structured factory test and site acceptance test reports; travel to 5–10 sites for maintenance, installation supervision, and commissioning; provided feedback to improve PowerTec’s design standards.
