What you'll be doing
The Aboriginal Health Workers position is to deliver all stages of planning, implementation, evaluation, reporting and sustainability of culturally responsive programs to improve health outcomes and address health inequities for Aboriginal communities in south western Sydney. Key focus areas include promoting healthy weight, reducing smoking, and vaping related harm, reducing rates of preventable chronic disease, and strengthening protective factors for mental health in Aboriginal communities.
The purpose of this position is to improve the health of Aboriginal people living in south western Sydney by contributing to Health Promotion programs of work in line with South Western Sydney Local Health District and the Ministry of Health’s goals, principles, and strategies.
The Aboriginal Health Promotion Officer (AHPO) will primarily work in the Health & Wellbeing stream and contribute to evidence based and / or innovative programs of work for population health priorities. The Health Promotion Officer may also work on projects from the Early Years & Healthy Ageing stream as required.
The AHPO will primarily be responsible for working with the team to :

This is an Identified Aboriginal / Torres Strait Islander Position. Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander descent through parentage, identify as an Aboriginal person and / or Torres Strait Islander and be accepted in the community as such. Exemption is claimed under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).Demonstrated experience in health promotion or health education OR qualifications in health OR willingness to complete further training as identified.Demonstrated knowledge and experience in health promotion planning, implementation, evaluation and dissemination particularly relating to Aboriginal health issues.Demonstrated knowledge and experience of current health promotion theory and evidence-based practice.Understanding of issues that may impact service delivery in Aboriginal communities.Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain partnerships with other staff and government, non-government and community organisations. Including experience working in community based settings with Aboriginal communities.Effective organisational, problem solving and team skills including the ability to work on a variety of projects simultaneously with minimal supervision.Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills, including skills in use of common computer packages preferably Microsoft Office, MS Outlook, social media and some desktop publishing skillsCurrent unrestricted Australian drivers licence (P2 Licence Acceptable) subject to obtaining NSW drivers licence within 3 months of appointment.
