Opportunities within Consumer Protection Division at DMIRS
We often have short term vacancies while our employees take a period of leave, are deployed elsewhere in the department or are seconded to other departments in the public sector. We also regularly need people to work on projects with funding for a finite period or to meet the short term needs of a branch when workload is high.
Our short term opportunities may be full time or part time and may be in a wide range of roles from administration, customer service, compliance, investigation, and information technology. Work locations vary, some vacancies are mainly based in Perth and some in our regional offices.
What does Consumer Protection Division do?
Within the Industry Regulation and Consumer Protection Group, the Consumer Protection Division is responsible for ensuring consumer rights are protected through the regulation of property, retail and services industries, including the registration of charities and associations and provision of dispute resolution mechanisms for consumers.
Consumer Protection provides dispute resolution services and gives advice on matters arising from consumer purchases of goods and services in all market sectors including retail, automotive, tenancy, properties and services sectors.

The possible opportunities

Tenancy Bonds Officers
You will process applications for the lodgement and disposal of tenancy bonds and give advice to customers regarding those applications. You will also perform administrative tasks to support the Bond Administration function as part of the provision of a timely and efficient service to all customers of the Bond Administrator. Your keen eye for detail, customer service expertise, and proficiency in data entry will be vital in fulfilling this role effectively.
Senior Tenancy Bonds Officers
You will assess and approve applications processed by Tenancy Bond Officers while supporting staff in the processing of these applications. You will also perform administrative tasks to support the Bonds Administration function as part of the provision of a timely and efficient service to all customers of the Bond Administrator, including communication with customers by phone, email and face to face. Your keen eye for detail, customer service expertise, and communication skills will be vital in fulfilling this role effectively.
Conciliation Officers
Conciliation Officers work within different Branches within the Consumer Protection Division. Your main responsibility will be to assist with resolution of disputes that emerge between parties, offering advice and engaging in negotiations concerning their rights and obligations under relevant consumer protection laws. To succeed in this role, you must be a confident communicator who is comfortable talking with a variety of customers on the phone and likes helping to solve problems. You will be provided with training opportunities to interpret and apply relevant legislation.
Assistant Compliance Officers
You will identify breaches for low level complaints against relevant legislation and conduct inquiries under supervision into complaints made to the Consumer Protection Division regarding relevant consumer protection laws. Your tasks will involve preparing reports, letters, and briefing notes adhering to departmental guidelines and providing advice to consumers, traders, industry associations and other stakeholders on matters relating to relevant legislation. Your expertise in reviewing complaints, gathering information, and analysing data to find solutions will be crucial in fulfilling the requirements of this role.
Investigations Officers
You will conduct investigations into complaints made to Consumer Protection in order to detect potential breaches against relevant consumer protection laws to ensure compliance. This will involve developing investigation plans, gathering witness statements, and conducting interviews with individuals involved. Your success in this role will depend on your capability to systematically collect information and evidence, as well as your ability to analyse and compare complaint details against legal requirements to identify potential breaches.
Compliance Officers
You will conduct on-site inspections at business premises to ensure compliance with legislation administered by the Commissioner for Consumer Protection. You will liaise, negotiate and consult with traders, consumers, industry associations and other industry stakeholder to ensure compliance with the relevant legislation. To excel in this role, you will be able to methodically collect information and prepare documents related to possible breaches of legislation. Your ability to communicate with traders about their obligations is also essential for this role.
