- Purpose of the role
The Home Underwriter is responsible for day to day underwriting of home insurance, as well as other insurance products as required in accordance with Underwriting Policy and Guidelines. Assists in updating and maintaining Underwriting Guidelines, PDS, Certificate of Insurance, renewal letters, and other relevant documents and templates. The Home Underwriter supports continuous improvement and automation of the company's underwriting practices, evaluating current processes, and proposing changes.
- The role
- Process underwriting referrals, making decisions in line with authority limits, applicable policies, and guidelines and, current legislation (i.e. Underwriting Policy, Underwriting Guidelines and others)
- Identify unacceptable risks providing advice and feedback to CSD, Claims and other stakeholders, clarifying policy wording, underwriting rules and intention within agreed service levels
- Implement underwriting & product strategy requirements
- Assist in updating and maintaining the Underwriting Guidelines and Policy
- Analyse the current underwriting process and rules, identifying the gaps and proposing improvements
- Assist with Home Product development
- Liaise with IT and other departments on technical issues affecting underwriting process
- Assist in implementation and maintenance of business rules supporting Underwriting Guidelines and Policy across IT systems
- Assist with business analysis and requirement gathering
- Assist with testing of system solutions, improvements, new developments, and audits of pricing systems
- Assisting with portfolio monitoring and reporting
- Monitor weather for exposure to cat events, assisting with potential sales embargosPerforming any other tasks as directed by the Senior Underwriting Manager and / or General Manager Home Underwriting and Product.
- What experience you'll bring
- Competency with insurance systems in use (e.g. DISC)
- Working knowledge of Excel and office software (e.g. MS Office)
- Ability to quickly acquire working knowledge of new software
- Sound numerical and analytical skills
- Ability to assess risks and make appropriate decisions within guidelines and underwriting authority limits
- Knowledge of relevant regulatory regimes, compliance and legislation covering insurance
- Knowledge of industry trends and best practice
- Ability to identify the issues, gaps and improvement opportunities in the current processes and systems and propose solutions
- Ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organisation
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Attention to detail and accuracy
- 2+ years of general insurance experience in Underwriting / Claims / Sales roles
- Professional qualification (e.g. ANZIIF Certificate in General Insurance) or comparable industry experience
