- Who we are
The Regional Fisheries Section develops policies and prepares advice on issues related to the management of shared and straddling fish stocks of interest to Australia, including by working through Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs) and related bodies to ensure Australia's fisheries interests are protected and shared stocks are sustainably managed. The section has responsibility for the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission, the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission, and the Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna. The section also leads the Branch in managing bilateral fisheries relationships with key fishing nations.
The JobWorking as part of a small, motivated team duties will include :
interacting with stakeholders (departmental and ministerial staff, AFMA officers, officers from other Australian Government agencies, international organisations including RFMOs, fishing industry members, fishing industry associations, Non-Government Organisations, and seafood consumers) on issues regarding regional fisheries engagement, policy and regulationinterpreting and advising on fisheries legislation, policy frameworks and regulating fisheries under these frameworksdeveloping evidence-based policy optionsundertaking research and analysis to inform policy development for stakeholder consideration and government approvalundertaking objective, critical analysis of complex issues considering the implications for key stakeholders, presenting logical arguments and drawing accurate conclusionsconsulting stakeholders regarding policy proposalspreparing briefs and policy advice for the department's executivecontributing to the development of legislationparticipating in international meetings and helping negotiate outcomes on behalf of Australia and the Australian fishing industrysupervising staff.Work locationWhat we are looking forKnowledge and experienceThe following knowledge and experience would be highly regarded :
