Located in the beautiful Darling Downs South-West region of Southern Queensland, the Southern Downs local government area is about 160 kilometres south-west of the Brisbane CBD. With bustling rural centres and quaint townships, the region is built on exceptional agriculture and farming foundations and boasts World Heritage listed national parks and recreation areas. The area is also rapidly becoming a gourmet food and wine destination and has an annual calendar full of exciting cultural and sporting events.

Southern Downs Regional Council is seeking a dynamic, strategic and outcomes-driven leader to join the Executive Leadership Team as Director Strategy, Growth and Stakeholder Engagement. This newly created position will play a critical role in repositioning and energising Council's approach to regional development, destination marketing, advocacy and stakeholder engagement.

Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, this is a high-impact opportunity to shape the economic identity of the Southern Downs region-leveraging its strengths in food and wine, tourism, agriculture and nature-based experiences while unlocking new partnerships and investment streams across public and private sectors.

A visionary and strategic leader you have already proven that you can drive economic prosperity, champion innovation, and forge powerful partnerships that promote sustainable regional growth. Ideally you will possess executive-level experience in economic development, destination marketing, major event attraction and strategic stakeholder engagement along with leading investment attraction, preferably across both public and private sectors. You can demonstrate strong capability in developing and implementing funding strategies, including grant applications and business case development.

A background in tourism, investment attraction, and intergovernmental relations is highly regarded. Additionally, a deep understanding of State and Federal Government funding structures, processes and stakeholder networks, with highly developed political acumen and outstanding communication skills to influence, advocate and manage complex external relationships.

On a personal level, you have a natural inclination to lead with empathy and should have values that align to those of the organisation. You build rapport and trust within your own teams, external stakeholders and across the organisation, taking time to genuinely listen, ask questions and have the courage to remain outcomes focussed to get stuff done!!

Relevant tertiary qualifications in Economic Development, Economics, Marketing, Business or Tourism or a related discipline are essential coupled with significant executive leadership experience in a complex or multi-stakeholder environment is essential.
